This community was called Lovewell's Town – for Capt. John Lovewell, whose heirs had settled the land – when it was first granted in 1728. Capt. Lovewell, who built the fort at Ossipee, had been killed fighting Native Americans at Pequawket. The town was commonly called Suncook, after the river, until it was renamed Pembroke in honor of Henry Herbert, the 9th Earl of Pembroke in southern Wales. |
